Bats etc
Time now 19:57/8.o7pm 14th July 2006.
After going on a bat survey at Toddler's Cove, near the Old Tannery site, it was found that Pipestrille were fairly common around the area near to the footbridge. A section of meadow was investigated beforehand in which no bats were detected. Later on that evening (Wednesday 12th July) a Daubenton's water bat was spotted flying up and down over the surface of the river. The Pipestrille reading on the bat detector was loud and high pitched whereas the reading from the water bat was rapid and duller in sound (our guide likened the sound to machine gun fire). One or two moths were out. Reports of Water Vole had been made in the area. An Otter may be in the area nearby.
Earlier on Wednesday evening an Admiral Butterfly seen. Green Woodpecker heard (disturbed at Kingsmead bridge). Kingfishers are in the area nearby.
Today (Friday 14th) I saw a Grasshopper with a red head whilst clearing out the Canterbury Environmental Education Centre wild garden. One or two butterflies.
Two brown rats at Kingsmead bridge this afternoon/lunchtime (Friday 14th July).
